Rambutan, anyone?

When we were on vacation back home in Philippines this year’s summer, we tried to munch a lot of Rambutan fruity because swithart and I both love this fruit so much. We used to have a couple of this fruit-bearing trees in our back yard when I was little and oh how much I loved it when the trees start to bloom some flowers which signaled it’s nearness to bear fruits. The fruit is sweet, juicy and oh so yummy and if you have tried this, I am sure you know what I’m talking about! Now I am sort of thinking of how good it would be to have some in the table. Back in the tropical Philipines, when it’s Rambutan season, this fruit floods every flea market in Mindanao at prices so affordable. True, there are a lot of apples and grapes and oranges here, but for my typical Filipino tastebuds, fruits I got used to eat a lot like Rambutan can never be replaced in my favorites. SIL always comforts me not to worry because when we could move to Las Vegas soon, we could always buy some anytime. I know, I know there are a lot sold in the place that come from Thailand but the look like this already:
Yes, they’re not fresh anymore as theyre very frozen. These are the bags of supposedly fresh Rambutans that SIL brought here when she went to Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago for her job interview there. And now that she got the job, we will be moving in there so soon. Well, she with MIL and FIL because we still will be left here until swithart gets to finish his schooling. These bags of Rambutan sure made me drool when I first got to look at them. But when I tried opening one, I knew it won’t taste as yummy as it should. A while ago, I was chatting with my friend in Thailand and it really made me crave for more. Why? Because she was showing me through her webcam her fresh rambutans and some other tropical fruits I am so missing these days when all I have are oranges of so many kinds! LOL

Two weeks ago, I found the same thing in the Vietnamese store here in Chicago – but they were fresh, a little bit black on the outside but it was ok inside. The mangosteens though were frozen. I have pictures in my carinderia.net/blog.
